Queermunity was founded by Hilary Otey and Kayla Barth, two women who came to the Twin Cities in search of authentic community and safe spaces where LGBTQ+ people could fully be themselves. Their vision became reality with the opening of Queermunity, a dedicated resource center in Uptown Minneapolis, located above the iconic Magers & Quinn Booksellers. Open to all, the space features office and desk rentals, co-working rooms, a café, a library, and more, all designed to foster connection, creativity, and collaboration.
Now more than ever, people are ready for a place like Queermunity, a place where people can be together, identify crucial resources and find real engagement with others. Queermunity is the first all-ages space of its kind in the Twin Cities, and in Minnesota, serving as both a unifier for the community and a draw to the Uptown neighborhood. Through a wide range of programming, Queermunity brings people together to share offerings and celebrate one another.
As business owners, Kayla and Hilary embody resourceful, dynamic entrepreneurship. They understand that it takes a diverse set of skills to make your dreams come alive. They leverage their own natural talents in their division of work, but they do not underestimate the power of partnership. Their staff and partners see their vision as clearly as they do and are helping bring this work to life.
Meeting with NDC in 2024, Queermunity was able to secure a loan that helped to develop their physical Uptown space. The space affords an energetic and adaptable feeling for all who visit and is flexible for events. Since working with our Lending team, they have also partnered with our Business Lab for support with general operations and licensing.
We are proud to support Queermunity in their journey and grateful that these entrepreneurs are creating a vibrant, welcoming space in the Twin Cities.
