Small businesses are subject to a myriad of federal, state, and local laws, including those addressing recruiting, hiring, employment and benefits. Some small businesses may wish to retain their workers as “consultants” or independent contractors, rather than as employees. Depending on the circumstances, this practice may run afoul of legal requirements, carrying the risk of DOL and IRS audits and potential penalties. This workshop will cover the classification of workers under current standards and the legal and practical issues that arise with the classification of workers.
