In 2003, NDC and its partners helped convince Minneapolis city officials that the historic Sears building at Chicago and Lake should be saved. All agreed that the building should somehow be connected to the growing ethnic diversity of the neighborhood and the entrepreneurial energy of the Lake Street business corridor.

Elected officials, local corporations and foundations, historic building preservationists, community groups, neighborhood residents and many others supported NDC’s goal of redeveloping the Sears building. Following extensive fundraising and planning, NDC and its partners redeveloped 72,000 square feet of the formerly vacant Sears building—opening Midtown Global Market (MGM) to the public in May 2006.

Today, MGM is a year-round public market rooted in the economic, social and cultural assets of the community surrounding Lake Street and Chicago Avenue in Minneapolis. MGM is a vital anchor in the community—a dynamic small business incubator site in which new entrepreneurs, many of them recent immigrants, can build a business and a future for themselves and their families.

MGM currently leases space to 45 businesses—with a capacity for 64—that employ over 250 people. Of these businesses, 90% of the owners represent diverse cultures or are recent immigrants; 45% are startups; and 45% are second-step businesses (with another location in a Twin Cities inner city neighborhood). These small businesses and frequent cultural events attract over 1.2 million people to the Market every year.
