Midtown Global Market

As a vacant and abandoned structure, the historic Sears building at the intersection of Lake Street and Chicago Avenue cast a dark shadow over the Phillips and Powderhorn neighborhoods in south Minneapolis. Nonetheless, neighbors were determined that the building should be saved and that its use should reflect and welcome the surrounding neighborhood.

The community's goals for the building ultimately created the vision for the Midtown Global Market, a multi-ethnic year round public market place, as a central component to the larger Midtown Exchange redevelopment project.

The Midtown Global Market, which is a partnership among four non profits (African Development Center, Latino Economic Development Center, Neighborhood Development Center and Powderhorn Phillips Cultural Wellness Center) opened in 2006 and is home to more than 40 small businesses featuring fresh fruits and vegetables, specialty groceries, prepared food and gifts from around the world.

The MGM has created more than 200 jobs and attracts more than 1.2 million visitors each year.
