AWASH MARKET
2015 Award Finalist: Awash Market
Category: Business Growth Award and Community Impact Award
It’s hard to believe, but Awash Market has only been open for a little over a year. As a 2013 graduate of the African Economic Development Solutions and NDC Plan It! Entrepreneur Training, Mubarek Lolo, along with partner Ramaden Adem, wasted no time in strategically opening Awash Market right across from a local mosque, filling a vacant storefront and offering customers access to both culturally-specific items as well as everyday necessities. This wonderful addition to the Frogtown area also houses other micro businesses, such as the coffee shop which just opened to celebrate the market’s one-year anniversary. Whether for Oromo soccer tournaments or the needs of the mosque and other community events, Awash Market has donated over $2,500 to the community. In just one year, Awash has grown to achieve a six-figure revenue, exceeding all its goals. One can only imagine where this business and its owners will go from here.
