Hope for sustaining Lake Street's comeback as a 21st Century urban corridor has rested heavily on the redevelopment of the mammoth former Sears Building, which has stood abandoned and vacant for more than a decade. Ryan Companies is developing the $130 Million ñMidtown Exchangeî renovation project which will include the headquarters of Allina Healthcare, a Sheraton Hotel, offices, and more than 350 units of rental and ownership housing.

The Midtown Global Market will occupy the first-floor, Lake Street side of the Midtown Exchange, and will offer a worldwide variety of fresh and prepared ethnic food in stalls and booths of various sizes, mixed with restaurants and small specialty grocery stores that reflect the significant populations in Minneapolis, including recent immigrants from Latin America, Africa and Asia; older immigrant groups from Europe, the Middle East, and Asia; and African American and Native American business owners.

The Midtown Global Market will have up to 60 small businesses, with roughly one-third in each of three tiers: start-up, second-stage growth, and anchor. Start-up businesses will come from graduates of recent and ongoing training classes offered by NDC and our Neighborhood Partners, which train more than 250 entrepreneurs annually.   It was modeled on traditional public marketplaces such as The Reading Terminal Market in Philadelphia and the Grandville Island in Vacouver.

In addition to creating a meaningful cultural link between the Midtown Exchange and the surrounding neighborhoods, the project will foster community economic development and provide business development opportunities to low-to-moderate income entrepreneurs of many different ethnic groups.
